What is GTLS? The permanent light source inside every Nite timepiece is called Gaseous Tritium Light Source (GTLS). Each of these lights is made up of a tiny sealed glass vial filled with a special phosphorous compound which is then illluminated by a minute quantity of tritium gas. Tritium is a isotope of hydrogen that occurs naturally and as a man made technology. As the gas decays, electrons are emitted which react with the phosphorous compound to produce the permanent, self-powered light source. No less than 16 of these tiny lights are set into every Nite timepiece, by hand. The dial illumination is, as a result, considerably brighter and more reliable than dial markings which use traditional methods of illumination yet is entirely self-powered, resulting in no additional drain on the watch battery.
